Coach: Barao “Losing Money Every Day” Because of Interim Title

Renan Barao

While Renan Barao doesn’t get nearly the same amount of credit and hype that some other UFC champs do, it’s hard to argue that the Nova Uniao fighter isn’t one of the promotion’s very best. After all, not only are we talking about a man who’s on a 31 fight win streak, but he’s gone 6-0 to date in the UFC and is the interim bantamweight champ.

Although Barao has likely benefitted tremendously from his impressive run and success with ZUFFA, the fighter’s head coach Andre Pederneiras says he should, and could be doing better financially. While appearing on recent edition of MMA Radio, Pederneiras relayed that Barao’s interim champ status isn’t as lucrative as one would think.

“He’s very frustrated because he needs to make money,” Pederneiras said. “So many sponsors here in Brazil are not sponsoring him because he’s not the real champion from the UFC. He’s the interim champion. He’s losing money every day.

“The sponsors here want a real champion. A linear champion.”

Now of course, Barao picked up an extra $50,000 for his recent stoppage win over Eddie Wineland at UFC 165, but one can understand his frustration. Reigning champ Dominick Cruz is reportedly still on track to return in 2014, which should mean the promotion won’t have an interim bantamweight title fairly soon.
