One bout was already set for the Super Bowl weekend card by the UFC, but officials went ahead and filled out the co-main event slot, as well.
Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira was made official for UFC 169, which will take place February 1 from Newark, New Jersey.
The other bout, featuring Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem, was moved from a November card to allow Mir more time to heal from a recent fight vs. Josh Barnett.
“The move was determined in conjunction with the Nevada State Athletic Commission representatives to provide more time following Frank Mir’s recent August 31st competition,” the statement read. “While there was no indication whatsoever that Mir wouldn’t be fully, medically cleared in time to compete on November 16th, UFC officials and Nevada Commission representatives believed that a short postponement would allow both athletes more time to train for the bout.
Jones pushed to be included on the card after defeating Alexander Gustafsson. He is a native of nearby New York.
Teixeira stopped Ryan Bader in September to cement his status as the next contender to the title.
