After going several years without having much to say about the other promotion, 2013 has seen some interesting comments from Bellator’s Bjorn Rebney and the UFC’s Dana White in this respect. Of course, since Bellator has made several big name signings recently, and some headline grabbing moves (like moving to SPIKE and FOX Sports Latin America), White has been fielding a lot more questions about his competitor.
Recently White was asked whether ZUFFA might consider buying Bellator at some point, like the company has done in the past with competitors like PRIDE and Strikeforce. The promotion’s outspoken president raised more than a few eyebrows, not so much by saying no, but by arguing Bellator has “no value.”
Now, in a recent follow up report from MMA Fighting.com, Rebney has fired back at White’s comments.
“It hasn’t been my practice to respond to his ongoing focus on Bellator. My focus is on the expansion of the Bellator brand worldwide and constantly creating a better more exciting, entertaining product for our fans. But….when he lofts softballs like this over the plate, you just have to take a swing. And, the facts here are that the UFC’s Partners at FOX just made a multi-year commitment, worth tens of millions of dollars to the Bellator brand. If that doesn’t paint a clear picture on value, I don’t know what would.”
If Bellator’s current seasons yields solid ratings, and it’s first PPV does better than many expect, it will be interesting to see if more exchanges between the two occur.
