Rousimar Palhares is known for his submissions, and Mike Pierce found that out the hard way Wednesday night at UFC Fight Night 29.
Just seconds into their welterweight contest, Palhares dropped down and locked in a heel hook, scoring the 10 submission win of his career.
Three of his last four wins have been via submission, and the victory snapped a two-fight losing skid for Palhares (15-5).
“There is no way to put this into words,” he said. “I just want to thank everybody. The energy that comes from above. Thank you to the Nogueira brothers.”
The fighter was extremely emotional at weigh-in, making 170 pounds for the first time in his career. That carried over into the Octagon, as he withstood a rushing Pierce and went for two submissions in just 30 seconds.
