Chris Cariaso went into Brazil and walked out with a victory, finishing Iliarde Santos at UFC Fight Night 29 Wednesday night.
After losing the first round, Cariaso got his offense going, landing several huge right hands that floored Santos. The stoppage came after the eighth-ranked flyweight caught the Brazilian against the cage and landed several uncontested shots.
While Santos didn’t falter, he appeared to be out on his feet and the ref stepped in.
“I’ve been working a lot with my Muay Thai coach,” Cariaso said. “He got my striking just dialed on point for the last six weeks.”
Cariaso (15-5) needed the victory after falling to Jussier Formiga and John Moraga in his last two fights. That skid came on the heels of a three-fight win streak, and should provide him a possible Top-10 opponent again next.
“Once I found my timing, everything clicked,” he added. “I give it up to Iliarde coming out and fighting me like I love to fight.”
