Josh Thomson’s held titles before – just never in the UFC.
Thomson will get that chance this December when he faces Anthony Pettis for the UFC lightweight title at UFC on FOX 9.
After returning to the Octagon and defeating Nate Diaz, “The Punk” was selected to replace TJ Grant and face Pettis. He jumped at the opportunity, and talked about it during a recent press conference.
“I feel like I’ve come full-circle,” he said. “Back when I left the UFC in 2004, I left as the No. 1 lightweight in the world. This means a lot.
“Having longevity in this sport is important. I’ve seen a lot of top names come and go, and the fact that I’m still here, fighting for the UFC title…I’ve come full circle.”
Thomson held the Strikeforce title before falling to Gilbert Melendez. He had a rematch with Melendez before the promotion closed, but was on the losing end of a decision.
