Brandon Thatch certainly lived up the hype that surrounded his UFC arrival in August, when he quickly took out Justin Edwards, and now he’s added an impressive stoppage win over Paulo Thiago to his record. If you missed it, Thatch crumpled Thiago to the mat with massive knee to the liver, and ended their UFC FN 32 fight with follow up punches. To date, “Rukus” has needed less than four minutes total to score two Octagon wins…
So, not surprisingly, UFC President Dana White was quick to heap praise on the welterweight, who now carries a record of 11-1. Speaking after UFC FN 32, here is some of what White had to say about Thatch (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“(Thatch was impressive), especially how good he looked with who he was fighting, and what he did to who he was fighting,” White added, after referring to Thatch as a “Stud. F—ing stud”. “I have a lot of respect for Thiago. (Thatch) hunted him down and stayed right in his face. Paulo Thiago knocked out (Josh) Koscheck and brutalized Mike Swick, and this kid stays right in his face and keeps going after him. I like this kid.”
Although Thatch took out an experienced vet like Thiago, who holds wins over veterans like Mike Swick and Josh Koscheck, the Colorado fighter evidently wasn’t thrilled with his performance.
“I’m happy with the win, but I feel I got a little sloppy toward the end there,” Thatch said. “I want to take the next couple of months to get back to basics and get more disciplined. I am happy with the win, though. To be honest, I’m excited to go grab a beer. When I heard the cheers for Paulo, I pretended it was for me.”
One would think that the UFC will look to match Thatch up against another established vet next, and if he can secure another win, a bout with a top ten welterweight could follow. It’s also worth nothing that all 11 of Thatch’s wins have come via first round stoppage or submission.
