Hendricks Vows Rematch With GSP “Won’t go the Distance”

Johny Hendricks

Immediately after it was announced that Georges St. Pierre had narrowly defeated Johny Hendricks via split decision at UFC 167, the latter vehemently disagreed with the judge’s decision. After having Dana White remind him that’s what happens when you leave it in the judge’s hands, however, Hendricks outlined why a rematch would be different.

According to Hendricks, a key reason why a second fight with St. Pierre would go a different route, is because he wasn’t throwing his feared bombs at 100% (comments via MMA

“I really didn’t hit him that hard,” Hendricks said. “I wasn’t really trying to knock him out. I was putting about 70 percent on him, and it was enough.”

The comment prompted White to point out that allowing the fight go the distance cost Hendricks dearly. Considering the damage he inflicted on St. Pierre throughout the bout, it’s not surprising to hear Hendricks make the following prediction about how a rematch would go.

“If I get to see him in the ring again, it won’t go the distance,” Hendricks said. “I will finish him. I know I can go five rounds now.”

Of course, since St. Pierre relayed he’s been dealing with personal issues, his supporters likely disagree with Hendricks’ comments. While White has made it clear he wants to book an immediate rematch, and surely most fans would like to see that, it remains to be seen when GSP will fight again. When asked about the fact it could be a while before St. Pierre returns, Hendricks responded:

“Dude, I don’t care about Georges,” he said. “I beat him anyway. I just want the belt. That’s the only thing that’s motivating me. I need to get it. That’s my drive. I thought I got it tonight, but I guess I didn’t. There’s a lot of things I can pull from this fight, and I’m only going to get better. It was my first five-round fight, and I took it to the champ.”

It’s going to be fascinating to see what comes next.
