Coach Clarifies Velasquez Surgery Situation

Cain Velasquez

Fans  were likely happy to hear on “UFC Tonight” last night that Cain Velasquez won’t have to undergo shoulder surgery, but now comes word that the heavyweight champ isn’t completely out of those woods just yet.

According to a follow up report from MMA, Velasquez’s long time coach Bob Cook has informed the outlet that:

“He’s going in to get re-evaluated in a week-and-a-half, and at that point, we’ll have a better idea,” Cook said about the renowned fighter’s shoulder, and whether it might require surgery. “But it’s not 100 percent one way or the other.”

Obviously if Velasquez does undergo surgery, then the 31 year-old would be unable to fight at the UFC’s Mexico debut, which is expected to take place in April. The UFC has already confirmed that Velasquez’s next opponent will be Fabricio Werdum.

“I think it all depends on the injury and how he feels,” Cook said, while discussing Velasquez’s short term future. “As soon as he’s good to go, he’ll fight. I think if he doesn’t need surgery, [April] should be a realistic timeframe. Hopefully, when the doctors look at him again, everything is doing what they want it to do, and he won’t need surgery and he can get going. But if it’s not progressing the way they want it to, then they’re going to fix it, and he’ll be out for a while.”

Hopefully Velasquez receives some good news at his next doctor’s appointment. Having the heavyweight champ compete at the UFC’s first card in Mexico would be huge.

As the aforementioned story points out, Velasquez tore his labrum and rotator cuff during his 2010 win over Brock Lesnar, and was sidelined for around a year as a result. Most recently, Velasquez stopped Junior dos Santos in the fifth round at UFC 166 to extend his record to 13-1.
