Shogun Rua Not Sure Middleweight Drop Is Possible

Some reports that former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua could entertain a drop to middleweight seem to be just rumors at this point.

Rua is set to face James Te Huna in Australia this December at UFC Fight Night 33. After back-to-back losses, the Brazilian finds himself at 5-6 overall inside the Octagon and in desperate need of a victory.

So, is 185 pounds something Rua (21-8) could do?

“To be honest, I would have to undergo some medical examinations regarding the possible weight drop,” said Rua, during a recent interview with “My walk-around weight is around 104, 105 kilograms (about 230 pounds). So to go down to 84 kilograms, I’d have to drop 20 kilograms (44).”

That would be quite a change in lifestyle between fights for the 12-year-veteran. Concerning the move, he added “Maybe I wouldn’t be able to do it. I’d have to work on that with my team. But it is something that could happen, yes.”
