UFN 33: “Shogun” Rua’s in no Hurry to Change Divisions

Heading into UFC Fight Night 33 there were two big questions surrounding “Shogun” Rua: what if he loses? And will he move to middleweight? Well, thanks to a crushing left hand that ended James Te Huna’s night in the opening round, the former champ can pretty much do whatever he likes.

Despite the win, Rua was asked about whether he might to move to middleweight after the win, since some observers believe he would benefit from doing so. Here is what the 32 year-old had to say (comments via MMA

“Those kinds of decisions are made with my team,” Rua said. “It’s up to my team to decide what’s next. I wouldn’t rule anything out at this moment, but rightfully so, we just want to celebrate. We’re going to celebrate the win. Then later on, we’ll talk.”

“No, I don’t think I’m changing weight classes right now,” he said. “At first, I will stay at light heavyweight, but I’m not thinking about any belt or title right now. I’m thinking about my next fight. This is my next dream, and my next goal. After that, we’ll see where it goes.”

Fair enough. Even before the victory, Rua never committed to making the move, and always noted that it could be a tough cut. And as far as Dana White, he’s evidently on board with whatever the star wants to do, as the UFC President tweeted:

Shogun can stay at whatever weight class he wants to. His performance tonight was amazing

It will certainly be interesting to see what comes next for Rua, and whether he can build on last night’s head turning win.
