WSOF 7: Karakhanyan Discusses Ground Game That Led to Win

georgi Karakhanyan

Considering Lance Palmer’s wrestling credentials and what he’s done thus far in MMA, there were plenty of folks who believed the Team Alpha Male fighter would be wearing the WSOF featherweight title today. While the rising star was able to take Georgi Karakhanyan to the mat as nearly everyone expected at WSOF 7, the latter’s highly regarded guard proved to be too much for Palmer.

Speaking after last night’s card in Vancouver, British Columbia, here is some of what Karakhanyan had to say about his ground game, which ultimately caught Palmer with a third round, guillotine choke (quotes via MMA Junkie.com):

“I knew if we went to the ground, I could get him because I attack differently than any other MMA fighter,” Karakhanyan said. “If he took me down, I wasn’t worried. So I was satisfied with my wrestling.”

“The first armbar I went for, his arm popped. Of course, he didn’t tap. Then I went for a heel hook and his knee popped. So I was impressed how tough he was,” the 28 year-old stated, while discussing other moments in the bout when he threatened with submissions.

The victory was Karakhanyan’s ninth in a row, and the Millennia MMA fighter has won five of those via submission and one by knockout. The only men to beat Karakhanyan since 2008 and in his last 20 bouts are Bellator stars Joe Warren and Patricio “Pitbull.” So, obviously the rugged vet is doing something right.

Karakhanyan also revealed in the interview that he nearly called it quits last night, after incurring a bad eye poke early on in the main event. According to Karakhanyan he couldn’t properly out of the eye until round three.
