UFC 170: Cormier Understands he has to “Hurt my Buddy”

daniel cormier

After months of speculation as to whether Daniel Cormier would in fact move to light-heavyweight, the top ranked fighter is finally booked to fight, not rival Jon Jones, but friend Rashad Evans.

Although Evans isn’t a training partner at American Kickboxing Academy, like heavyweight champ Cain Vealasquez, Cormier works alongside “Suga” with FOX Sports. So how does the renowned wrestler feel about fighting Evans, February 22nd? Well, while appearing on the latest “MMA Hour”, here is some of what Cormier had to say (comments via MMA

“It’s difficult,” Cormier said. “[Rashad and I] talked a couple of days before when we were hearing that the fight was going to take place, and it was tough. We were like, ‘hey man we’re going to fight and put on a good show.’ But when you receive a bout agreement and you see a guy’s name on that bout sheet, it becomes a little different…because then it’s real.

“I care about him a ton, but now it’s time to get down to business and we got to go in that cage and I got to try and hurt him. I mean, I can’t go into the cage feeling like I don’t want to hurt my buddy. Because otherwise he’s going to hurt me, and beat me, and that will set me back and keep me from attaining my goals.”

That’s a good way of looking at it. Especially since Evans just stormed through Chael Sonnen at UFC 167, who is also a co-worker at FOX and a friend. It certainly would be huge for Cormier, if he can defeat the promotion’s #3, 205’er in his light-heavyweight debut.

UFC 170 will be hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
