Cain Velasquez Sidelined For Extended Future; UFC Boss Wants Werdum To Take Fight

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will likely be sidelined for the first five or six months of 2014, according to UFC president Dana White.

Velasquez, who underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum recently, is expected to face Fabricio Werdum.

Werdum, though, hasn’t fought since submitting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in June, waiting to cash in on his No. 1 contender status. White, appearing on “UFC Tonight” Wednesday, stated a desire to see the Brazilian back in action before Velasquez is allowed to return.

On FOX Sports Live later that night, it was reported that the promotion wishes for Werdum to take on the winner of Travis Browne-Josh Barnett, a heavyweight contest set for this month.

For what it’s worth, Browne appears ready for that, posting on Twitter “let’s coach a TUF show then winner fights Cain!!”
