Anderson Silva: “We Have to Respect” GSP

Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva recently made it clear he has no intention of stepping away from fighting any time soon, but the legendary fighter evidently understands why Georges St. Pierre has vacated the title.

The former middleweight champ attended a media call Tuesday to promote his December 28th rematch with Chris Weidman, and not surprisingly, he was asked to weigh in on GSP’s recent decision.

The 38 year-old legend stated (comments via MMA Fighting.com):

“I think that everyone knows their right timing and the moment they’re living,” said Silva, who will look to avenge his KO loss to Weidman at UFC 168. “You have to respect Georges St-Pierre for everything he’s done in the sport. If he feels like this is the correct time, we have to respect him. Everyone knows their time they have to retire or take a moment to step away, so, you gotta respect it.”

Considering it wasn’t long ago that Silva openly talked about the pressures of carrying the title, and that immediately following UFC 162 he said he was done pursuing the belt, his comments shouldn’t surprise anyone. Ronda Rousey also said on the same call that St. Pierre deserves to “go rest” and noted that no one has spent as much time as the former champ in the Octagon.

Now it will be interesting to see whether Silva can defeat Weidman at UFC 168, and if he can’t, will the consensus G.O.A.T. continue to fight like he says? Or could the UFC face a 2014 without two of it’s biggest stars ever?

UFC 168 will go down December 28th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. What a way to close out the 2013 UFC campaign.
