UFC 168: Camoes Discusses First MMA Bout, Fighting Silva Afterwards

Fabricio Camoes

While UFC 168 will feature two must see, title fights, it will also showcase several key match-ups, including Fabricio Camoes taking on veteran lightweight contender Jim Miller.

If you’ve followed the UFC for a few years now, then you know that Miller has been in the mix at 155 for sometime, but has lost three of his last five fights (yes, this includes his defeat versus Pat Healy, which was overturned to a no-contest). Another loss could lead to Miller’s exit from the top ten rankings.

Although Camoes hasn’t score as many high profile wins in the Octagon as Miller, the 34 year-old BJJ black belt is not to be taken lightly. Not only is a “Morango” a decorated grappler, but he’s been fighting professionally since 1997. This is why the interview Camoes recently gave RM Sports regarding his first and second pro bout, was pretty interesting. Here is some of what the Brazilian had to say:

“The category was 80 kilograms, that’s 181 pounds right, and I was pretty much 160. I was not even that heavy. But I was so excited to be part of that show and to do my first MMA fight that I accepted the challenge. It was a tournament and it was 10 minute rounds. My first round, of my first fight, I knocked out the guy; I threw a couple of punches, he fell, I took him down, mount, couple more punches…it was a TKO.”

“The next fight was against Anderson Silva. That fight was I think the toughest fight of my career. It was 27 minutes, and the referee stopped the fight because I was laid down on the floor, he was kicking my legs and I was not able to do much.”

For the record, Moranga stopped Eliezer Silvestre that June 25th, 1997 night, before he faced Silva and was forced to retire over 25 minutes into the bout…That’s not the kind of thing you hear about in today’s MMA world is it? Be sure to check out the rest of the interview below.
