UFC 168’s Ronda Rousey Excited By Addition Of Strawweight Division

UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey believes the pressure to carry women’s MMA in the UFC has been lifted off her shoulders – at least partially.

The promotion announced plans recently to bring in female strawweight fighters, with them comprising the roster for the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2014. A champion will be crowned upon the conclusion of the reality series.

For Rousey, that alone means she won’t be the lone female UFC champion, and that’s a good thing.

“I can’t wait for a new women’s champion and having some of the responsibilities and pressure be taken off me,” she said, during a recent appearance on UFC Tonight. “I could use a little help.”

Rousey added that the 115-pound fighters are “all super talented, charismatic and super cute. The UFC has really recognized the value the women can bring and is investing in them and thinking long-term.”

Bec Hyatt, Invicta FC champion Carla Esparza, Rose Namajunas, Felice Herrig, Tecia Torres and Joanne Calderwood are just a few of the women signed. The remaining TUF bracket will be determined by tryouts in early 2014.

As for Rousey, she is next in action a week from today when she defends her title against Miesha Tate at UFC 168.
