UFC 170 Adds Rousey-McMann, Nurmagomedov-Melendez

Sara McMann

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will not be idle long as her next fight was announced at the UFC 168 Post-Fight Press Conference. The champ will take on fellow Olympic medalist Sara McMann in the new UFC 170 main event. UFC president Dana White made the announcement and even had promotional material ready shortly after Rousey defeated Miesha Tate.

Rousey spoke about the pairing at the press conference, stating:

“Dana approached me about this before the fight, but I’d taken such a long time off that I wanted to fight again soon, I don’t want to sit on the shelf. I’m in the best shape of my life, so it’s the perfect time to go back-to-back. I’m still hungry and that’s what I want to do. Hopefully I’ll have another good show for you guys very soon.”

Rousey will face a stern test when she takes on the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in wrestling. McMann has amassed a 7-0 record since transitioning to MMA, making her successful UFC debut at UFC 159 by steamrolling Sheila Gaff. The two undefeated women will look to dole out their opponent’s first loss when they meet at the Mandalay Bay Event Center on February 22.

The UFC also confirmed a lightweight pairing between top contenders Gilbert Melendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov for the February card. UFC 170’s previous main event, a lightweight showdown between Daniel Cormier and Rashad Evans, will now be the night’s co-main event and has been reduced to a three round fight.
