UFC 168: Renowned Surgeon Discusses Silva’s Injury and Future

Anderson Silva

The MMA world is still reeling from Anderson Silva’s gruesome injury Saturday night at UFC 168, which resulted in his second straight loss to middleweight champ Chris Weidman. Clearly no one wants to see that happen to any competitor, but when it happens to one of the planet’s best and most famous fighters of all time, the fall out is going to be considerable.

While the UFC has announced that Silva’s post-fight surgery went well, and that the former champ had an intramedullary rod inserted into his left tibia, it remains to be seen if the legend will fight again. In a follow up report from Bloody, renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Steve Mora weighed in on Silva’s injury and the recovery process that’s ahead.

Here is some of what Mora had to say:

His age is not a big contributing factor. 38 is not old when it comes to this injury. As far as this injury healing properly, he should have an excellent chance, if it’s an uncomplicated fracture without nerve damage. He’s a healthy man, so the bone should heal properly. The people that have problems with healing fractures are the elderly or people with major health problems.

How long is it going to take to heal? The injury could take 3-6 months to heal, and then to be recovered enough to get back to fighting, it could take a year, not because of age, but because of the nature of the fracture. They tend to be stubborn to heal in everybody. I think there’s a very good chance that he heals and recovers sufficiently to get back to his fighting career. That’s obviously if he wants to. He’ll have to get over some hurdles, but it’s quite possible that he can.

Hopefully Silva’s recovery goes well and without complications, and it certainly sounds like a comeback is possible depending on the extent of the injury. As Mora noted, however, it might depend on whether “The Spider” wants to launch a comeback. By the time he’s ready to compete again he’ll be nearly 40. There’s a good chance his storied career has come to an end.
