Chad Mendes-Cub Swanson Makes Sense If UFC Vacates Featherweight Title

UFC president Dana White made an appearance on “FOX Sports Live” late Wednesday night, but wasn’t prepared to confirm any future fights involving Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis.

This past weekend, both fighters agreed to meet later this year when Pettis, the UFC lightweight champion, returns from injury.

However, in the days following, both camps of the champs have been hesitant to keep the bout on. Aldo, the UFC featherweight titleholder, appears to want the fight at a catch-weight so both keep their belts, while Pettis’ team feels that is pointless.

If – and he reminded us all it’s just a big if – Aldo does vacate the belt, White has a championship match in place.

“What would make sense is Cub Swanson and Chad Mendes would probably be fighting for that title, and Pettis and Aldo would fight at 155,” White said.

White went on to make a point-blank statement regarding the “issues” over where Aldo and Pettis would fight, as well.

“There’s no disagreement over the weight,” he said. “They’re going to fight at 155. What will happen is Aldo would have to give up his title (and) move up to 155.”

As for the potential title-contenders, Mendes (16-1) has only lost to Aldo in his career, while Swanson (20-5) has posted a 5-1 UFC record since coming over from the WEC.
