UFC Fight Night 36: Jacaré vs. Carmont Recap

UFC Fight Night 36: Jacaré vs. Carmont Recap

Tonight’s UFC Fight Night 36  co-main event saw Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza take on Francis Carmont. While Carmont was very confident heading into Brazil it would be Jacaré who got his hand raised tonight in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil.

Jacaré Controls Carmont

Moral victories typically mean very little in MMA, and while Francis Carmont managing to survive having Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza on his back for two rounds is impressive, it would not win him a fight. While Carmont enjoyed a sizable size advantage over the Brazilian, Souza’s improved striking negated that advantage the majority of the fight. Souza has now won six straight dating back to his 2011 loss to Luke Rockhold.

It was over when:

Jacaré’s kneetap takedown in the third round all but sealed the fight in his favor. In 1991, former University of Florida standout and coach Steve Spurrier dubbed Ben Hill Griffin Stadium “The Swamp” because it is where “Gators are comfortable” and Jacaré should seriously consider co-opting that label for his control of the UFC canvas. While Carmont avoided the finish, Jacaré’s dominance on the ground was evident again tonight.

What’s Next?

Jacaré wants the champ, and while I believe he should get the winner of Vitor Belfort and UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman’s upcoming title fight, the UFC could look to pair up the impressive fighter with someone else in the interim (or if he is passed over) and Luke Rockhold makes a lot of sense there given their history but he is booked against Tim Boetsch.

For Carmont, he simply was not ready for Jacaré and there is no shame in that. I think a bout with Derek Brunson could work here.
