UFC 170: Zach Makovsky Reflects On His Bellator Release

UFC 170: Zach Makovsky Reflects On His Bellator Release

Zach Makovsky has built himself into a quick contender in the UFC’s flyweight division after debuting with a win over Scott Jorgensen.

Now, the former Bellator champion has a chance to make it two in a row this evening when he faces Josh Sampo at UFC 170 as part of the prelim card.

Makovsky, known also by the nickname “Fun Size,” is on a three-fight win streak overall since back-to-back losses in Bellator.

Along with gaining experience inside the cage, Makovsky studies as much of the fight game as he can in his free time.

“I watch a ton of fight footage,” said Makovsky, during a recent edition of Heavy Hands. “I watch fights every day. Sometimes it’s boxing. Sometimes it’s Muay Thai. Sometimes it’s just jiu-jitsu matches or MMA.

“If I see something I like, then I try to pick it up.”

Makovsky also talked about his sudden release from Bellator back in 2012. After winning the title by claiming the season three tournament final over Ed West, Makovsky fought twice in non-title fights.

In 2011, he dropped the belt to Eduardo Dantas via submission in his first defense. He followed that up with a split decision defeat vs. Anthony Leone.

“Bjorn (Rebney, Bellator CEO) came back and told me, ‘This is a surprise but we’ll get through it.’ Then, two weeks later or something, I got an email that said I was being released,” Makovsky reflected. “No one wants to get cut or fired, but overall, it was kind of the result I wanted (ending up in the UFC).

“Maybe not in the matter I wanted it to happen.”

We’ll have complete coverage of UFC 170 this evening.
