Georges St-Pierre Fighting OCD In Order To Return To MMA

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre offered up a more to-the-point reason for his decision to step away from MMA recently, citing a battle with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder, better known as OCD, is described as having unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead you to do repetitive behaviors. It can affect your daily life, your career and everyone around you.

St-Pierre, appearing on CBC’s The National recently, discussed his battle with the disorder.

As a fighter, it’s a good thing to have it because it makes you better because you completely obsess about being a better martial artist,” GSP admitted. “Everything you do is oriented around that goal.

“But the same thing could be bad for a normal person in normal life.”

St-Pierre added that OCD was taking over his life, keeping him from sleeping more than a handful of hours a night.

“It was going to drive me crazy,” he said. “That’s why I took that break. I had my first New Year’s and Christmas with my family – a real one.”

He continued, describing his feelings about competing in MMA, saying, “If you lose a race or a game in hockey, you lose a game. That’s it. If you lose a fight, you might lose part of your brain because of the damage.”
