UFC 171 Results: Garcia Edges Spencer In All-Out War

In a very closely contested welterweight bout between Dominican Republic prospect, Alex Garcia, and 2-1 UFC competitor, Sean Spencer, these two fight their hearts outs to the very last bell. Coming into the bout, we knew both Spencer and Garcia could bang on the feet and they did exactly that. Spencer seemed the faster of the two as he landed more often with more volume and looked like the overall crisper striker, but Garcia stayed competitive with his abundance of power.

While Spencer and Garcia seemed fairly evenly matched on the feet, it was the takedowns of Garcia gave him the nod in the end. Garcia landed several takedowns and landed them at will. While Spencer was able to get back up nearly immediately after each of them, they were enough to sway the odds his way.

The first round was all Garcia as he landed several right uppercuts and also took Spencer down and controlled him. The second round looked to be going Garcia’s way as well until Spencer rocked him with a right hand after separating from the clinch. Spencer pushed forward, looking to finish, but Garcia’s power put him back in the game as he answered with a vicious flurry of strikes and nearly had Spencer finished. The third round slightly favored Spencer as he looked like the fresher fighter and was definitely the faster of the two. Unfortunately, a checked leg kick looked to have injured his left ankle. This hindered Spencer’s movement considerably and allowed Garcia to land a bit more punches and also secure the needed takedowns to ultimately win the fight by split decision.

While this performance from Garcia was more competitive than many were expecting, it showed that Garcia is a well-rounded guy who is equally as exciting. He throws lots of power and isn’t afraid to take risks in fights. His takedowns are powerful and his ground and pound is vicious. Right now, his biggest weakness seems to be his cardio which started to fail him after his crazy exchange with Spencer towards the end of the second round.
