Johny Hendricks: Late Fall Return After Surgery Is Likely

UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks wants to be a fighting champion.

He also knows that there is no point in entering the Octagon if he is not healthy.

Hendricks, who will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a torn bicep, is targeting a return to action late this year. He won the belt with a decision victory over Robbie Lawler.

“I should be back and ready to go in normal time. October or November would be perfect,” said Hendricks, during an appearance on UFC Tonight. “I don’t want to rush it, but I want to give people a shot at the belt.”

Hendricks also suffered a shin injury during his win over Lawler, along with the normal bumps and bruises that a five-round fight presents.

A former NCAA wrestling champion, Hendricks said he never thought about stopping the championship match due to being hurt.

“It was painful,” he said. “I just had the wrestler instinct. It’s the difference between being hurt and injured.

“I knew I was injured, but told myself I wasn’t hurt until after the fight.”

A rematch with Lawler, Rory MacDonald, Tyron Woodley and several others are in the running to fight for the belt.
