Renan Barao Expects Next Opponent To Be Raphael Assuncao

UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao knows he has plenty of challenges yet to fend off before thinking about a change in weight classes.

Barao, who sports an incredible 32-1 record that includes seven wins inside the Octagon, is likely to face Raphael Assuncao later this year.

“I’m coon in this weight division,” he said, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I think there’s still a lot of work to do.

“I’m okay here and there’s still a lot of work to do.”

Of course, one division up sits Nova Uniao teammate Jose Aldo, the reigning featherweight champion.

“We’ve always talked about this,” Barao said. “Whatever’s best for the team and whatever (head coach Andre Pederneiras) felt I should do, would be for the best.”

Coming off a February victory over Urijah Faber, Barao said he would “probably like to fight at the end of June, early July.

“Starting June, I’ll be ready to fight and keep the belt.”
