WSOF 9 Results: Palhares, Moraes Secure Championship Gold

Former UFC fighter Rousimar Palhares did what he does best Saturday night, submitting Steve Carl in the main event of World Series of Fighting 9 to become the welterweight champion.

In a battle of submission expects, Palhares locked in a heel hook at 1:09 of the very first round to secure the tap. He was released from the UFC last year after failing to break a submission hold applied to Mike Pierce.

“Much respect for Steve Carl,” Palhares wrote on Twitter. “He is a high level fighter, very strong. Thanks for taking this challenge.”

The loss snapped a seven-fight win streak for Carl, all of which came via submission.

“There’s a reason no one else would fight him,” Carl wrote on Facebook. “I’m still alive and good news he blew my knee out on my bad leg leaving me with one good one still. I have a smile on my face and fire in my heart.

“I’ll be back.”

In the co-main event, Marlon Moraes became the first bantamweight champion in WSOF history, scoring a decision victory over Josh Rettinghouse.

Other main card action included ex-UFC fighter Yushin Okami submitting Svetlozar Savov in the second round and Josh Burkman knocking out Tyler Stinson in the first.
