Diego Sanchez Feels UFC Battles Have Only Left Him With Cuts, Not Trauma

It might surprise you to hear that Diego Sanchez doesn’t believe he has taken a lot of damage during his long UFC career.

Sanchez, a former winner of The Ultimate Fighter, is coming off a second straight decision loss to Myles Jury this past March. He will return to action later this year at UFC Fight Night when he meets Ross Pearson.

Known for his ability to go all-out, Sanchez recently told FOXSports.com that, despite many gruesome battles that have left him a bloody mess, he doesn’t feel like much damage has been done to his brain.

“To be honest, I don’t feel like I’ve been hit very hard,” Sanchez said. “I took a couple of hard hits (at welterweight), and of course BJ (Penn) hit me hard, but aside from that, I think it’s more cuts than anything.

“I’m not taking a lot of damage. I’ve never felt foggy after a fight. I’ve never had a concussion in a fight and I’ve never been knocked out.”

With the recent mass study to determine brain damage inflicted on fighters and other athletes, “The Dream” doesn’t sound like he’s willing to help further the evidence.

“As far as taking all the trauma, no, that’s not the issue,” he said. “It’s the cuts.”

During his loss to Jury, Sanchez was cut immediately after taking a shot. He feels the amount of scar tissue used to repair his wounds is becoming a problem, and mentioned having surgery in the future.

“Taking the cuts that I am, I’m always battling the judges and it just hinders me,” Sanchez said. “I’m getting to that point in my career where that might be a better option for me.”

Since that infamous 2009 loss to Penn for the UFC lightweight title, each of the last seven fights Sanchez has had went to the scorecards. He is 3-4 during that time.
