Anthony Pettis Going For The Finish Vs. Gilbert Melendez

tuf 20

UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis will make his first title defense later this year against Gilbert Melendez. Before that happens, both will be coaches on the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Recently, “Showtime” told Tatame out of Brazil that he believes his striking is better than that of Melendez.

In terms of finishes, Pettis owns eight knockout wins in 19 career fights, while Melendez has 11 in 26 bouts.

“I’m going for the knockout or the submission,” Pettis said. “I won my last three fights in the first round and I’m coming to win.”

Pettis (17-2) submitted Benson Henderson with less than 30 seconds left in the opening round to become champion last August, while he scored a first round TKO over Donald Cerrone and a knockout in just over a minute vs. Joe Lauzon.

“Melendez has what it takes to be at the top of the division,” he said. “He had a good fight against Ben Henderson and beat Diego Sanchez, but I feel that my striking is better than his. I have kicks, punches and reach in my favor, and my striking is better.”

Both career losses by Pettis have come via decision.
