Jake Shields

Former UFC welterweight title contender Jake Shields has been released by the promotion, according to confirmation from his manager to

Shields, who turned 35 years old this past January, was defeated by Hector Lombard in March. The ex-Strikeforce champion has posted a 4-3 record since joining the UFC in 2010, including one no-contest vs. Ed Herman.

“Jake and our team are already exploring options,” said Lex McMahon, manager for Shields through Alchemist Management. “I’m confident that Jake will have a new promotion to call home very soon.”

Shields (29-7-1) joining the UFC on the heels of a decision victory over Dan Henderson. He topped Martin Kampmann via decision in 2010 and earned a shot at Georges St-Pierre for the belt in 2011.

After suffering a decision loss to GSP, Shields was stopped by Jake Ellenberger. The bout came just days after the passing of his father.

Shields rebounded to defeat Yoshihiro Akiyama before topping Herman. However, the result was changed to a no-contest after failing the post-fight drug test. The fight also came at middleweight, as Shields was contemplating a move to the division.

In 2013, he returned to defeat Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia via split decisions before the recent loss to Lombard.

“Jake is an elite athlete who is one of the best welterweight fighters in the world,” McMahon said, “with a long history of winning at a championship level.”

Shields debuted in 1999 and is also a former EliteXC welterweight champion.
