Jake Shields Headed To The World Series Of Fighting

Former Strikeforce and EliteXC champion Jake Shields has agreed to a contract with the World Series of Fighting. Shields confirmed the signing with Bleacher Report on Thursday.

Shields (29-7-1) was released from the UFC earlier this year after a loss to Hector Lombard. The 35-year-old was unbeaten in his four previous fights before falling to Lombard, winning three and having another victory changed to a no-contest after a failed drug test.

“I am very excited to be fighting for the World Series of Fighting. They have one of if not the best welterweight divisions in the world and I look forward to fighting great fighters like Jon Fitch, Rousimar Palhares, Josh Burkman, Gerald Harris and more,” Shields said in a statement. “I also believe I will now be in an environment where fighters are embraced which will allow my performance at my very best!

“My first fight for WSOF will be soon so stay tuned. My thanks to the MMA community and fans for all the love and support.”

Despite the news from Shields himself, WSOF executive Ali Abdelaziz posted on Twitter that things are not quite yet official or ready to be announced.

“Deal not done yet,” he sent to Bleacher Report.

The WSOF welterweight title is currently held by Rousimar Palhares, who defeated Steve Carl. Palhares, a fellow former UFC veteran, is scheduled to defend the belt against Jon Fitch later this year, with Josh Burkman being groomed as the next contender.
