UFC 173’s Renan Barao Seeking Bigger Paydays Going Forward

UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao believes his reputation and resume speak for themselves. That’s why he’s willing to step inside the Octagon whenever the promotion needs him.

And he hopes that company-first mindset will result in a bigger payday going forward.

Barao will meet T.J. Dillashaw to close out May at UFC 173. The bout replaces a planned main event between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida for the middleweight title.

“I prefer to rest a little more, but the UFC needed me,” said Barao, during a recent interview with Esporte, “so I’m here to save the event. They called me and I accepted. It’s always good to fight in these big events. I was pretty happy.”

Barao, though, believes he is underpaid. Sitting at No. 3 on the UFC’s pound-for-pound list – and a favorite to lead the pack whenever UFC president Dana White brings it up – the Brazilian wants a raise.

“It is what it is,” he said. “I’m very happy being UFC champion, but I would like to improve my contract. I hope that after this fight I can have a much better contract. I hope it improves everyday.”

Barao cited Urijah Faber as one person that “has a much better purse than mine.” Barao has defeated Faber twice.
