Jon Jones Handles Glover Teixeira, Successfully Defends Title At UFC 172

Jon Jones altered the game plan he and his coaches devised for UFC 172 just moments into the main event vs. Glover Teixeira Saturday night.

From there, it was all improvisation, as “Bones” earned a decision victory and successfully defended his light heavyweight title in Baltimore.

“A lot of it was improv,” Jones said. “I saw he was trying to pick me apart from distance and realized he was winding up. You can’t wind up when someone is on you, so it worked out great.

“I realized I was a lot better hand fighter than he was, which comes from years and years of wrestling.”

The win was the 14th for Jones at 205 pounds, setting a new UFC record. He entered the night tied with former champion Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans, who were both in attendance. It also marked a seventh successful title defense, already a high-water mark with the UFC.

Jones said he respected Teixeira and Brazil after the fight, adding that he was “grateful for the challenge.

“(The fight) went like we thought it would,” he added. “Glover is not the most versatile fighter and we saw a lot of things we were looking for.”

Jones entered the Octagon to a large ovation, as his brothers, NFL players Arthur and Chandler, were in attendance. He even paid tribute to former Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis by using his pre-game dance to come out to.

What followed was a long, drawn out entrance mixed with numerous songs, including “The Champ Is Here.” Jones also wore a t-shirt that read “And Still” champion after his win.
