Phil Davis Denied By Anthony Johnson On Road To Title-Fight

ufc 172

Phil Davis talked the talk leading up to UFC 172, saying he would go through Anthony Johnson – and anybody else – on his way to challenging for the title.

However, that locomotive came to a screeching halt, as Davis was picked apart by Johnson in the co-main event Saturday night.

The former NCAA wrestling champion posted on Twitter that he was “Sorry guys….(audible sigh) thanks so much for all the support.”

Johnson, making his return to the UFC, hurt “Mr. Wonderful” early with a stiff shot and had him backing up throughout the remainder of their three-round fight. He was also denied on numerous takedown attempts, his bread-and-butter.

Davis went 0-for-8 on his takedowns, while also being out-struck 47-27. He landed just two shots in the first round and was stopped three times while trying to bring “Rumble” to the ground.
