Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Suffered Torn ACL Days Before Nelson Fight

Former interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is not ready to retire. Instead, “Minotauro” will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered just days before his recent fight with Roy Nelson.

After that, the 37-year-old Brazilian wants to compete at least once more inside the Octagon. Nogueira (34-9-1) has lost his last two and is just 2-4 in his last six overall – with all six defeats coming by either submission or knockout.

“I want to recover and see what happens, but I want to fight,” said Nogueira, in an interview with MMAFighting.com. “I was feeling great, had a great training camp for this fight. I was fast, but I couldn’t perform. I have to recover and start it all over again.”

Nogueira stated that the knee is not the same one he had operated on three years ago. He also isn’t interested in arguing with UFC president Dana White, who said he hoped Nogueira would retire after the loss to Nelson.

“He thinks as the president of an organization,” he said. “Maybe he likes me and says that thinking about my image, but I fought a good fighter with heavy hands. I don’t see (his statement) as a bad thing.”
