Robbie Lawler Serves Notice He’s Back After Dismantling Ellenberger

ufc 173

Robbie Lawler quickly got back in the win column, earning his 20th career finish with a third round TKO victory over Jake Ellenberger Saturday night at UFC 173.

Earlier this year, Lawler (23-10) suffered a decision loss to Johny Hendricks for the vacant welterweight title. Instead of waiting around, he got right back in the gym and accepted the fight with Ellenberger.

“I wasn’t gonna cry,” Lawler said. “I was going to get back in line, beat people up and make everyone know I’m the best and I’m coming for that title.”

Lawler had little trouble in the battle of former college wrestlers, laughing when Ellenberger recorded a pair of takedowns. He simply reversed things and stood up, picking him apart on the feet.

“He is a really good fighter,” Lawler said. “I wanted to showcase what I am capable of and let everybody know I’m coming for that title.”

Before the fight was called, Lawler held an 86-34 advantage in total strikes, all of which were significant ones. Ellenberger landed just 33-percent of his significant strikes.

Lawler is in his second stint with the UFC and has now won five of his last seven, as he also lost via decision to Lorenz Larkin in Strikeforce in 2012.

For Ellenberger (29-8), this was his second straight loss and dropped him to just 2-3 in his last five after stringing together a six-bout win streak.
