Raphael Assuncao Makes Case To Challenge T.J. Dillashaw

Raphael Assuncao was forced to sit on the sidelines and watch as T.J. Dillashaw took his UFC bantamweight title fight and defeated Renan Barao last month.

Assuncao, who scored a split decision victory over Dillashaw, believes he should be the first fighter to challenge the new champion. Had it not been for an injury, Assuncao would have been paired with Barao.

“Boss (Dana White), me and TJ had a very close fight in which I won and he thought he did,” Assuncao posted on Twitter recently, “(please) let’s make this rematch for my shot at title?!”

The 31-year-old Brazilian has won six straight, including a 2013 decision over Dillashaw. Assuncao (22-4) topped Pedro Munhoz in February, but was left unable to accept the fight vs. Barao for the belt.

Assuncao also holds wins over Johnny Eduardo, Mike Easton and Vaughan Lee since a 2011 knockout defeat at the hands of Erik Koch.

Dillashaw (10-2) stunned the MMA world when he bruised and battered Barao for four-plus rounds, finishing him in the fifth to become champion. He is 6-2 inside the Octagon and was a runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter.
