Johny Hendricks Talks Next Opponent, Rematch With GSP

Johny Hendricks

Johny Hendricks has his mind made up about who he wants his first UFC welterweight title defense to come again.

Whoever the No. 1 contender is.

While Rory MacDonald, Tyron Woodley, Matt Brown, Hector Lombard, Robbie Lawler and others all jockey to become that man, Hendricks remains on the sidelines, recovering from bicep surgery.

So, does he have a preference out of those fighters as to who he faces?

“I don’t care,” said Hendricks, during a recent interview on UFC Tonight. “I’m going to have to fight one of them. It doesn’t matter.”

Hendricks (16-2) won the vacant belt when he bested Lawler this past March. The five-round war left him with the bicep injury and a slew of other issues with his body. He has targeted fall for a return to the Octagon.

The last loss “Bigg Rigg” suffered inside the Octagon came to Georges St-Pierre by split decision in 2013. GSP later vacated the title, leaving Hendricks without a shot at a rematch.

Does that bother the former Oklahoma State University standout wrestler? About as much as who his challenger will be.

“I’d love to have a rematch,” he said. “But if he never comes back, it wouldn’t bother me. I’m trying to make my own legacy.”
