UFC 175: Weidman Ready To Face “The Phenom”

Vitor Belfort

Chris Weidman responded to the challenge of Vitor Belfort just moments after defeating Lyoto Machida Saturday night at UFC 175 and successfully defending his middleweight title.

“If he passes his drug test, that sounds good,” Weidman said, during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1.

Weidman and Belfort were originally scheduled to meet in May, but the UFC pulled Belfort after banning the use of TRT. Since that time, it has become public knowledge that “The Phenom” failed a drug test in Nevada for elevated levels of testosterone.

For Weidman, though, this weekend was all about overcoming the puzzle that is Machida – despite having one of the worst fight camps of his career.

“I couldn’t hit pads for two weeks and my hand was messed up. My knees need a break,” Weidman said. “I think I rushed it a little after the surgery. It was a tough camp to get through.”

After the switch from Belfort to Machida, Weidman himself postponed the title defense to have minor knee operations on both legs. While he was happy with the win, he was disappointed in seeing his finish streak come to an end.

“I wanted to finish him,” Weidman admitted. “He’s tough. Maybe I should have stayed after him a little more.”

While Weidman pointed to Belfort next, FS1 analysts Daniel Cormier and Brian Stann both mentioned Luke Rockhold as a potential challenger.
