Bellator Was No Longer Right For Alvarez, According To Scott Coker

Scott Coker would have loved to keep Eddie Alvarez under contract and fighting for him in Bellator MMA.

But, after taking over for Bjorn Rebney and sitting down with Alvarez and his manager, Glenn Robinson, Coker knew things were never going to be good.

“I sat down with Eddie face-to-face one week after I came in and we had a good conversation with Glenn Robinson, Eddie and myself,” Coker said following a recent event (thanks to MMAjunkie.com for the comments). “We had a great conversation, but it was clear to me at that time that there was going to be a problem.

“He had so much emotional damage from the last regime and I just don’t think he was going to be a good fit.”

Coker let the lawyers settle things with Alvarez and his contract before releasing him. The then-lightweight champion immediately signed with UFC and will face Donald Cerrone this month in his debut fight at UFC 178.

“I wish him luck,” Coker said. “We’re doing our own thing and moving in a different direction.”

Bellator will crown a new 155-pound champion in November when Will Brooks squares off with Michael Chandler.
