UFC 178’s Chris Cariaso Ready To Prove Doubters Wrong

Chris Cariaso knows there is only one way to end the UFC flyweight title run of Demetrious Johnson.

“How you beat this guy is you prepare for his pace, and you’re ready for his pace and his speed,” said Cariaso, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “You hurt him. That’s how you beat this guy. Watch the fight on September 27 and I’ll show you exactly why I deserve this shot.”

The two will compete in the main event of UFC 178 this Saturday night, which FightLine will be providing full coverage from.

Cariaso (17-5) has won three straight fights, but wasn’t on the radar for a title shot. Injuries and other planned bouts featuring flyweights left him with the opportunity of a lifetime. Since a 2013 loss to Jussier Formiga, he has topped Louis Smolka, Danny Martinez and Iliarde Santos.

“Wherever the fight goes, I’ll be ready for it,” he said. “He’s never fought a striker like me. He hasn’t met a guy with grappling like me on the ground. A lot of people haven’t seen my grappling, but it’s definitely something to watch out for.”

Johnson is the only man to wear the UFC 125-pound title, winning it with a decision victory over Joseph Benavidez. He has also topped Ali Bagautinov, John Moraga and John Dodson, and sports an 8-1-1 overall UFC mark. His only loss inside the Octagon came to Demetrious Johnson for the bantamweight title in 2011.
