UFC 178 Recap: Cat Zingano Cements Her Status As No. 1 Contender

Cat Zingano was filled with emotion coming into the Octagon, during her return and after her finish of Amanda Nunes at UFC 178 Saturday night.

“Alpha” secured her title shot against Ronda Rousey for the female bantamweight title, dominating Nunes after a rough opening round.

Zingano (9-0) has been on the sidelines for 18 months recovering from a knee surgery and the emotional loss of her husband and coach. She took out all that aggression on Nunes in the second and third rounds, finishing her just over a minute into the final five.

“(Expletive) yeah,” said Zingano, when asked how close to being out she was in the first round. “I don’t know. I wasn’t done, I just had to get out of that round.”

Once she did, it was all Zingano, as the unbeaten fighter controlled the action with her wrestling and ground-and-pound. After a throw in the third that left Nunes (9-4) on her back, she opened her up with a shot. Blood continued to pour until the referee called a stop to the fight.

Zingano said she was “ready” for Rousey, but for now, there is just one person she wants to see.

“I want to go home to my little boy,” she said. “I am over this shit.”
