Anderson Silva: Mission Back To Title Starts With Nick Diaz

Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva appeared to be content with the idea of just competing in “super-fights” until officially hanging up his gloves. He’s scheduled to return to action this January against Nick Diaz in such a bout.

However, “The Spider” is now talking about regaining the UFC middleweight title – a strap he wore for years inside the Octagon. Here’s what Silva told Veja, a Brazilian media source, recently:

“My project is in the UFC one,” he said. “While I did not get the belt back, I do not stop. I want to at least try.”

We all remember the last time Silva competed, suffering a gruesome broken leg in a loss to Chris Weidman in 2013. Earlier this year, he lost the title to Weidman via knockout.

After a long recovery process, Silva agreed to return and take on Diaz in 2015. He has learned to balance his life a little more since the injury, something he believes will help.

“Nothing is more important than you have family close by in difficult times,” he said. “Without them, neither physical not mental nor emotional part would be good today. What this adds more experience for me is to feel more and more the importance of them.”

He’s fought for the UFC since 2006, defeating the likes of Rich Franklin, Chael Sonnen, Yushin Okami, Forrest Griffin and Vitor Belfort along the way. But this version of Silva is a different one, he says.

“I feel a more complete athlete,” Silva stated. “The martial art is a lesson of life, and that goes both in and out of the Octagon. Of course, you feel old, this is normal. But keep focused and do everything right, how to train, eat well, follow your diet and focus exclusively during four months in preparation for the fight are things that bring me comfort and confidence.”
