UFC Fight Night 56: “UFC Tonight” Breaks It Down

ufc fight night 56

“UFC Tonight” hosts Daniel Cormier and Kenny Florian offered up their thoughts on tonight’s main event at UFC Fight Night 56 between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Ovince St. Preux earlier this week.

Rua was originally set to face James Te Huna, but Te Huna suffered an injury in training and was forced out. OSP, scheduled to fight in the co-main event, gladly accepted the headline fight vs. a former champion.

“OSP is being thrust into a bigger fight against Shogun than he had,” Cormier said. “That doesn’t happen to guys who lost their last fight. He has a real big opportunity. His athleticism will carry him. The big gap between him and Shogun is athleticism.”

St. Preux, a former college football standout, lost to Ryan Bader earlier this year. That snapped a lengthy win streak for him. Rua is coming off a loss as well, having fallen to Dan Henderson.

“(Rua) was landing his shots (vs. Henderson), doing everything he needed to do,” Florian said. “But he lost his focus, got tired and got hit with Dan Henderson’s right hand. He’s fighting smarter than eh has in the past.”

Cormier echoed those thoughts, saying, “I believe we’ll see a good Shogun Rua. He’s going to look like he did in the Dan Henderson fight. He looked pretty good in that one, and before that, he put a beating on James Te Huna. He has the ability to show his experience against a guy like OSP.”

FightLine will have complete coverage this evening of Rua-OSP, along with the rest of the main card.
