UFC 180’s Mark Hunt Promises He’ll Be Back

Mark Hunt knows better than most what it feels like to be at the bottom of the barrel.

After a series of losses, Hunt worked his way to the top of the UFC’s heavyweight division Saturday night, earning an interim title match with Fabricio Werdum. “The Super Samoan” was defeated via second round knockout at UFC 180, but he isn’t planning on going anywhere.

“I’ll be back,” he said, during an interview on FOX Sports. “I’m still one of the best fighters in the world. I might have lost (Saturday), and I’m one of the older guys, but I’m still keeping up.”

Hunt (10-9-1) has gone 1-1-1 in his last three, but that includes a knockout of Roy Nelson. He is 5-2-1 overall since suffering a sixth straight loss in 2010 to Sean McCorkle.

Most viewed Werdum as the heavy favorite going in, but Hunt stormed out after him in the first round. He dropped him twice with his heavy hands, but was caught with a knee in the second.

“I feel like I was knocked out. My gas was starting to get to me. It was a good trick. He caught me. I got caught. I got a knee in my face,” he said. “Congratulations to you Fabricio. In this division, if you get caught, you get caught.”

UFC president Dana White commented on Hunt’s performance, as the heavyweight stepped in on short notice to replace Cain Velasquez after the champion was injured.

“I think it was the perfect way to play out. He fought in Japan in September and wasn’t hurt. Then he had three weeks off,” White said. “As soon as he got the call for this fight, he flew right here. Mark Hunt’s not going to learn to fight any better at this point in his career. He just needed to get in shape.”
