Cain Velasquez Sad He Missed UFC 180

ufc 180

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez played the role of “good soldier” this past week, helping the UFC usher themselves into Mexico.

Velasquez was expected to main event UFC 180 against Fabricio Werdum, but a knee injury forced him to the sidelines. Werdum went on to knock Mark Hunt out in the second round, becoming the interim champion in the process.

The two are tentatively scheduled to meet in 2015 once Velasquez is cleared to return. Sitting cageside to watch the action of the fight was difficult for Velasquez.

“Fabricio does everything and he does it well. He spins, he kicks and he does it all,” he said, during an interview on FOX Sports. “I wish I could have fought him here, but I couldn’t. It was hard watching.”

UFC president Dana White stirred the pot when he mentioned the possibility of Velasquez being stripped of the title. Due to injuries and filming of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, he hasn’t fought since late in 2013. White cleared those comments up on the post-fight show.

“That’s not what I said,” he stated. “I said if we ended up in a situation where he got severely injured again where he can’t fight for several more months, then we’d strip him.”
