UFC 181: New Welterweight Champion Is Crowned

ufc 181

Robbie Lawler let out a loud scream that finally took the pressure off his shoulders after years of trying to become UFC champion.

Lawler earned a split decision over Johny Hendricks Saturday night at UFC 181, becoming the new welterweight champion in the process. Earlier this year, “Ruthless” lost to Hendricks via decision.

“I wanted this title. I did it,” he screamed.

In the opening round, Lawler (25-10) stormed out after “Bigg Rigg,” going for the finish. He pulled back in the second and third rounds before pushing the tempo once again late.

That included an incredibly scary finish, as Lawler tried to take Hendricks’ head off as the bell sounded. Once the final round was over, he continued to stalk the former champion around the Octagon.

“I wanted to fight, to keep fighting,” Lawler said, “as long as it took.

“It’s been an amazing journey. I’ve had a lot of guys behind me, the fans; this wasn’t easy.”
