UFC On FOX 13: Jamie Varner Announces Retirement After Loss

ufc on fox 13

Former WEC champion Jamie Varner announced his retirement Saturday night following a fourth straight loss. Varner was submitted in the first round by Drew Dober at UFC on FOX 13.

Varner (21-11) won the WEC lightweight title in 2008 with a third round TKO victory over Rob McCullough. He defended the belt twice before losing it in 2010 to Benson Henderson. His successful defenses came vs. Donald Cerrone and Marcus Hicks.

“I planned this a long time ago,” said Varner, a native of Arizona who left his gloves inside the Octagon. “My family knew. I knew this was my last fight.

“I can’t keep up with these young kids. I’ve been battling injuries all the time; my hat’s off to Drew.”

Varner admitted he has other things to keep himself occupied going forward, including his own gym. He went 3-6 over two stints with the UFC.

“This has been an absolute dream,” Varner said. “I have done things I never thought I would do. Thank you very much.”

Thank you for everything @jamievarner and I appreciate all the texts this week!!!
