Daniel Cormier Heartbroken, In Tears After UFC 182 Defeat

ufc 182

Daniel Cormier sat in the back of the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night, alone and in deep thought.

Moments after failing to achieve his goal of becoming the UFC light heavyweight champion at UFC 182, Cormier talked about the fight vs. Jon Jones with FOX Sports 1.

“Disappointment,” he said with red eyes. “I worked so hard to accomplish this goal and it didn’t happen.

“He was better today. He beat me and won the fight. Obviously he is a champion for a reason and he showed it (Saturday night).”

Cormier (15-1) suffered his first pro defeat following wins over the likes of Dan Henderson, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir and Josh Barnett. “DC” was also stopped short of his amateur goal on the wrestling mat at the Summer Olympics.

Jones, a former NJCAA national wrestling champion, became the first fighter to take Cormier down inside the cage. He did so four more times, and constantly defended the takedown attempt of the challenger.

“For the first time in my career, I was absorbing damage,” Cormier said. “He landed a really good knee or something in the first round that got my rib real good. I could feel it.

“He felt a little big in the clinch. I took the fourth round off and I wish I wouldn’t have done that and competed better.”
