UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones out-wrestled Daniel Cormier Saturday night, retaining his light heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 182.
Jones, who earned his 12th consecutive win in the process, admitted that Cormier got under his skin during the build to the fight.
“Sorry for being classless,” Jones said. “I do not like ‘DC.’ That is why I’m being this way.”
Jones took the former Olympic wrestler down numerous times, and fended off the many takedown attempts by Cormier. He eluded to the “Break Bones” shirts put out by Cormier’s team, donning a shirt of his own that stated “Unbroken” after the win.
“It felt great (taking him down),” he said. “All the haters. All the crap he talked. It motivated me.”
The fight ended with an interesting altercation, as Jones appeared to start celebrating by putting his hands in the air with seconds left. Cormier fired off a couple of shots and Jones responded as the horn sounded. The final strike by Cormier glanced off Jones and hit referee Herb Dean.
Cormier suffered his first career loss, falling to 15-1. Jones is now 21-1 in his career, with his lone defeat being of the disqualification variety vs. Matt Hamill for illegal elbows.
